For the first time, women can wear pants in olympic figure skating competition. What is this world coming to? Before you know it men will be competing in skirts. In the women's competition. Against women who wear pants.

Speaking of women vs. men, let me tell you about a conversation DJ and I had yesterday.

Before we moved to Boston we had a, uh, rather heated discussion about what middle names to give our future children. Not that we're planning on having children anytime soon or anything...

The issue is that they are going to 1/2 Korean and 1/2 Chinese and since the Korean last name is non-negotiable and the first name will likely be some sort of wacky thing that at the moment sounds hip yet timeless, I feel that their middle name should be Chinese. That way their name is 33% Korean, 33% Chinese and 33% "American." This is more descriptive, no?

DJ was (and still is) strongly opposed to the Chinese middle name. Why? You need to ask him because I can't understand it myself. But I'm starting a petition to give my future kids a Chinese middle name so if you want to sign it, email me.

Anyways, we were thinking about good compromises and these are the solutions we came up with for the middle names:

--My maiden name. Example: "Isabella Chu Jeong" or "Cooper Chu Jeong"

--Chinese. "Lauren Shin-Hwa Jeong" or "Boston Mei-lin Jeong" (Hey - if boys can be named "Austin," why can't they be named "Boston?")

--1/2 Chinese, 1/2 Korean. "Lauren Eun-hwa Jeong" or "Micah Chen-soo Jeong"

Finally, DJ's favorite, which he almost suckered me into shaking hands on...

--Boys he chooses and girls I choose.

Let's see what you all think. Come on, people, don't disappoint.

What kind of middle name do you think DJ and PJ should give their future children?
PJ maiden name - ex - Isabella Chu Jeong or Cooper Chu Jeong
Chinese - ex - Lauren Shin-Hwa Jeong or Boston Mei-lin Jeong
1/2 Chinese, 1/2 Korean - ex - Lauren Eun-hwa Jeong or Micah Chen-soo Jeong
DJ chooses boy middle names and PJ chooses girl middle names

The problem with any "foreign" middle names for my friends, is I don't know them. Unless my friends have American middle names, I don't know them. I just assume everyone's mididle name is Ping if it's not American.

Sounds like our dilemma...that's why we gave Carissa a japanese middle name. Hee hee.

I love that my single vote, brought it up to a 16% spread!

i think you shoudl choose a korean sounding chinese name or a chinese sounding korean name.

So if you go with option 3, that means that in addition to having a Chinese middle name for his child, DJ has to be stressed about boys who may want to date his daughter that has a Chinese middle name...

Another thought...don't Koreans use Chinese characters, too? All that's different is that they pronounce it differently sometimes. Have one side (korean or chinese) pick a name and see how it's pronounced in the opposite. Same name-Two languages.

i like roz and songwriterlee's last comment. shin-hwa could be a korean name actually.
now, does dj's dad have any thoughts on this? traditionally, korean paternal grandfathers are supposed to give the name to their grandchildren. if he's really traditional, then he may want to carry on the family character - which corresponds with specific generation.
c's brother had his dad name the kids, and i think my sister-in-law's parents may sometimes call him by this name pronounced in chinese.
after much deliberation, i voted for the last choice. it was too difficult. :)

personally, i'm not too hot on the chinese middle name (i'm glad i'm joyce and not ya-ru). but don't fret it girl, you'll be spending 24/7 with this kid while dj (if he's lucky) will spend 8-10 hours/5 days, and maybe 12 hours/2 days (weekends). which culture do you think he/she's going to identify with? it'll probably change its own name when it gets older...

I kind of like the name Phoenix. But the kid would either be super cool or get beaten up. Same with Boston I think.

Our deal was this: if it's a girl, my mom gets to pick the Korean middle name. If it's a boy, his dad. Because of the whole generational character thing. (stupid paternalistic thing...jk!)

anyway, DJ's last name is actually Chinese at the root of it so either way...

I like Roz's idea though.
