I think you're discounting how many racist or sexist liberals there are out there. The majority of the nation is intolerant and stupid. One of us is never as dumb as all of us.
hmm, i would have to disagree with you, yellowinter, that hillary would eek out a win in the end if she were up against mccain. though hardcore conservatives aren't thrilled w/mccain, many would be motivated to vote for him just to thwart a hillary win. also, i suspect that there are plenty of independents (and perhaps even enough democrats) whose enthusiasm for hillary has evaporated. mccain would pull in a significant number of these voters.
pauline, can you elaborate on why you think obama would destroy mccain? at this moment obama's chief asset seems to be his fresh face and uniter moniker in contrast to hillary's divisiveness.
do you think the dynamics might look different in a general election, though? obama's uniter stance might be neutralized somewhat by the fact that mccain has independent appeal (though he will certainly continue to tack right to galvanize the base).
and i'm not to sure that by that time there won't have been a more significant effort underway to present obama's "newness and change" as simply inexperience.
