In an effort to procrastinate on GMAT studying, I decided to call my good friends at the IRS to see why they still haven't paid the $4,500+ I lent them in '05. (That's too much money, yes, I know.) I'm quite impressed that at this very moment I've been on the phone for only 32 minutes and have already been transferred from the regular Customer Service Rep to the Tax Law Department where they can supposedly wave a magic wand and make these holds disappear. Thirty-two minutes is much better than 58 minutes, which is how long it took when I tried calling ten days ago. But I'm not complaining since there is a distinct possibility that I sent the return without actually signing it.

Update: Sixty-eight minutes have now elapsed and apparently the IRS has put my account on hold while waiting for something. What? I don't know. The Tax Law guy doesn't know. The IRS doesn't know. Nobody knows. What is slighly amusing in all this is that the guys asks me if there is any reason why my refund was received on April 14th but not processed until June 12.

Seriously, buddy, if I knew the reason, I would not be talking to you.

My battery is going to run out before I speak to a live person again.

Update: Eighty-five minutes have now elapsed and I have been told yet again that I should call back next week to check for updates on my account at which point if there is no movement I will be referred to tax payer advocates where I can waste another two hours of my life.

Next year I will hire an accountant.

I was trying to figure out why it was taking so long to get my state tax return, and lo and behold, I filled out my taxes on a 2004 form. Oops! At least I caught it before they paid me twice for 2004 and then audited me. Good luck with getting your cash! At least my state return is only about $500. I'd be a little less patient about waiting for $4,500!
